Can a Christian Not Obey Jesus?

Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."

Someone asked me today if a person can be a Christian, but not obey Jesus.   The first answer to come to mind was NO.  But upon further consideration I realized the answer is far more complex and can actually be "yes and no."

At the very heart of Christianity is loving Jesus so much that we WANT to obey Him even though we often fall short. I no longer refer to myself as a Christian because I have realized that there is a distinction between what we call ourselves and what we actually ARE. How we conduct ourselves, how we think and what we do is what determines if we truly are followers of Christ. The word "Christianity" was never mentioned in the Bible. I suppose the original intent was to denote those who believe in Christ, but the devil even knows who Jesus is....he certainly does not believe IN Him, but surely believes He is the Messiah.  In fact, he knows it better than most people do, which is why he fights so hard to keep true Believers from sharing the Truth.

So to answer the question "can someone be a Christian but not obey Jesus" I would have to say that anyone can call themselves a Christian, but only a fraction of those who claim the title are actually Jesus FOLLOWERS. That is why Jesus Himself said in Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter."

Jesus makes it clear.  Only those who do the will of God will enter, no matter what title they give themselves. Sadly there are many Christians who believe they are saved but they are not.  The good news is that we can keep sharing the Good News in hopes that many who hear it will be saved. That is the Great Commission.
