“What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. “ James 4:1-3
The purpose of life is not prosperity. I am called to love God, love people and to share the Gospel, which provides evidence of both. Whenever I share the Word of God, I am issuing a prophetic utterance, of which is said will never return void.
Conversely, the prosperity gospel, AKA “name it and claim it” misses the point entirely. As a member of this belief system, I am no better than those folks who followed Jesus around seeking miracles and personal gain. It should be noted that these same people shouted “crucify Him” when it was perceived that He had let them down. Such a despicable way to treat our Savior!
No, my goal is to share the Word and the Good News of Christ and then to live out of God’s abundance which is tailor made for ME. I must therefore be cautious never to compare what I have or lack to the blessings bestowed on others. Covetness and gratitude simply cannot peacefully co-exist for where envy resides, it will most certainly dominate thankfulness.
